Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams
Live at Levon’s!  (Royal Potato Family Music)

Levon Helm’s studio in Woodstock, New York is the perfect venue for the married duo of veteran multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, and about a hundred others) and Teresa Williams to record a live album. After all, Campbell led the house band there for over a decade, fronting Helm’s infamous Midnight Ramble shows before he passed in 2012. There’s a vibe to the location that can be felt as the twosome, along with a three-piece backing band, roll through a dozen tracks in front of an appreciative audience culled from September 2019. Campbell is in especially fine form as he alternates between fiddle, pedal steel and lead guitar. Cover tunes include “Big River,” John Sebastians’ “Darling Be Home Soon,” Loretta Lynn’s weepy broken marriage ballad “Success” and Louis Prima’s frisky “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah”.  This is a jubilant show, captured in stunning clarity and perfectly mixed by drummer Justin Guip. It’ll make your life at least a little better … and isn’t that what a great live album should do?  (edited from American Songwriter review)

Mark Erelli
Lay Your Darkness Down
  (Soundly Music)

Boston-based singer/songwriter Mark Erelli was playing a show a couple of years ago when he looked down at his guitar and realized he was having trouble seeing the frets and his fingers working through the chords. A doctor’s visit led to the diagnosis of a degenerative eye disease that will likely lead to blindness. That in mind, many of the themes weaved throughout his latest LP, Lay Your Darkness Down, take on new meaning. Even some of the songs written before the diagnosis coincidentally could be seen as alluding to his likely fate. Songs like the title track, “Up Against The Night,” “Sense Of Wonder” and “Break In The Clouds,” could be about facing his inevitable loss or a generalized sense of appreciating what you have and had, which is part of the charm of Erelli’s lyrics: they are descriptive enough to be relatable and vague enough to be about a slew of different things to different people. With allusions to light, darkness and shadows throughout, You can’t help but find clues (even if they’re unintentional) to Erelli’s fading sight throughout Lay Your Darkness Down. But even given that heavy topic, themes of forging ahead and love ultimately play a larger role throughout the record. (edited from Glide Magazine review)

Americana Music Releases for Jan. 27th

Pony Bradshaw
North Georgia Rounder  (Soundly Music)

A less twangy Sturgill Simpson, a more rugged Ryan Adams, a gentler Waylon Jennings, Bradshaw’s sound is effortlessly cool and sincerely soulful. It encapsulates so many great influences, spanning genres. There’s a smorgasbord of sampling from jukebox favorites and, at the same time, the sound is uniquely Bradshaw’s own, especially vocally. There are some inspirations present, perhaps Lyle Lovett. His voice is smooth, yet it’s evident he’s done some living. Perhaps Bradshaw’s strongest quality is his songwriting, which grips the listener on every song. (edited from Americana Highways review)

Johnny Nicholas
Johnny Nicholas Presents Moon and the Stars: a Tribute to Moon Mullican
(Volume One) and (Volume Two)  (Valcour Records)

Revered for perfecting a wildly eclectic yet seamlessly organic blend of genres, Aubrey “Moon” Mullican (1909 – 1967) was an agile piano player and a fervent singer who described the rambunctious side of his hybrid repertoire as ‘East Texas sock’ that could ‘make goddamn beer bottles jump on the tables!’ This 2-volume set features new renditions of his songs, co-produced by Nicholas and Joel Savoy, pulse with the same passion and artistic commitment that Mullican brought to the originals. As you would expect with veteran artists and roots music legends like Linda Gail Lewis, Augie Meyers, Peter Rowan, Steve Riley, Earl P Ball, Los Texmaniacs, Floyd Domino, and Danny Levin, this was accomplished in spades. This project was a labor of love and represents a wish by all of us involved to honor one of our heroes and bring some long overdue recognition to the ‘King of the Honky Tonk Piano Players.  (edited from American Blues Scene review)

Americana Music Releases for Jan. 13th

Margo Price
Strays  (Loma Vista Recordings)

Margo Price has not been idle this past couple of ever-so-strange years. She squeezed out a much delayed album in 2020, all while putting the finishing touches to her heartfelt memoir, Maybe We’ll Make It. What’s best of all, she’s finally got the band back together; reuniting the Price Tags for this extraordinary and pulsating album of psychedelic Americana that thrives off intense therapy sessions and famous mushroom trips. Immediately, Price and her band jump straight back into what they do best. ‘Been to the Mountain’ rears its colossal head with a Doors-esque intro, all cymbals crashing, huge guitar licks and waves of towering organ. Price cries out that she has nothing to prove and nothing to sell, questioning herself and her existence as she dances around multiple, conflicting identities.

Whitehorse
I’m Not Crying, You’re Crying   (Six Shooter Records)

After dropping two albums in one year in 2021, husband-and-wife duo Whitehorse (Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland), took all of 2022 to record another one. Between the two of them, they have clocked mileage in folk, blues, rock and various other styles. This time, however, they lean heavily on classic-style country vibes, channeling George and Tammy, Kenny and Dolly, and other beloved duos. All of this is delivered through their not-as-easy-as-they-look, homey harmonies and Doucet’s shapeshifting guitar work.  Plenty of artists have revisited ‘70s-era country music in recent years, but it’s a treat to be welcomed to the table by this pair of artists who have truly internalized their Nashville heroes. Both are able to embody numerous styles and concepts at once. Hearing them together can be thrilling. I’m Not Crying, You’re Crying is a welcome entrée for fans and newcomers alike.  (edited from Folk Alley review)

Adeem The Artist
White Trash Revelry   (Four Quarters Records)

Like Jason Isbell, BJ Barham and Sarah Shook, Adeem The Artist is part of a new generation of Southern Americana/Country artists who have managed to write remarkably catchy music influenced by Appalachia and Nashville but wrapped in progressive lyrics and ideals. Building on many of the same song themes from last year’s Cast-Iron Pansexual, they sing ardently about racism on “Heritage Of Arrogance”; faith on “Going To Hell”; gender identity on “Redneck, Unread Hicks”; and the ubiquity of meth and painkillers on “Painkillers & Magic”. Add to that the generational trauma that is weaved throughout the record, but amazingly there is also plenty of love and revelry to be found as well here, keeping the maudlin moments at bay. There is a deeply satisfying mix of songs on this record, from the earnest to the deeply humorous, making for an album to fit just about every mood.  (edited from Glide Magazine review)

Melissa Carper
Ramblin’ Soul
(MAE Music)

It’s tempting to label Melissa Carper as some sort of retro revivalist. She is, after all, an artist that retains a deep reverence for country’s past precepts. That was evident with her debut LP, Daddy’s Country Gold, an album that not only garnered her added attention, but a new nickname as well — “Hill Billie Holiday.” She’s sassy and seductive as they come, a diehard devotee of classic country and other forms of archival Americana as well. There’s a decided sense of wanderlust that surges through the set as a whole, which not only inspired the album’s title, but also the footloose freedom that enabled Carper to breach a few boundaries, giving each of these tracks lives of their own. (edited from Holler. review)

Billy Strings
Me/and/Dad
(Rounder Records)

According to a press statement, the album is “the product of a longtime dream” and it “features new versions of fourteen bluegrass and country classics that Strings and his father, Terry Barber, have been playing together since Strings was a young child.” Of the new project, Strings says, “As long as I can remember, I wanted to make a record with my dad. It’s been a bucket list thing for me, something I’ve been afraid I wouldn’t find the time to do. And that scared me; not doing this record scared me.” In addition to Strings and Barber, the album features an all-star band including  Ron and Rob McCoury, fiddler Michael Cleveland as well as special guest appearances by Jerry Douglas, Jason Carter and Strings’ mother, Debra Barber, who sings on the final track, ‘I Heard My Mother Weeping.’” (edited from American Songwriter review)

Brian Blake – Book of Life  (HWY90 Records)  +

Sam Bush
Radio John: Songs of John Hartford  (Smithsonian Folkways Records)

Hartford was a friend, influence, and mentor to Bush early in his career. To pay tribute, Bush has dug into Hartford’s catalog to record not only his favorites but also songs that he and Hartford played together in the 1970s. According to a press release, “Bush plays every instrument—acoustic guitar, mandolin, banjo, electric bass, fiddle—on every cut except the big, full band finale “Radio John,” the collection’s one original song and a tribute to Hartford that Bush wrote with John Pennell. … Bush first conceived of the album on a pre-pandemic trip with his wife to the Florida panhandle. He had brought an array of instruments and began playing around with songs from the vast Hartford catalog. He intended to record demos for his band, but, as he jokes, “in true Sam style, lack of engineering skills and patience, I was having a rough time overdubbing by myself.”  (edited from Folk Alley review)

Various Artists
Live Forever: A Tribute to Billy Joe Shaver  (New West Records)

Ray Wylie Hubbard once said that “Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, and Billy Joe Shaver are the three guys who form the Holy Trinity of Texas songwriters.” Shaver’s one of those songwriters who’s admired by many, but recognized by few. Although he’s credited by some with inventing outlaw country, he’s never gained the recognition that Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and others have. This album is a testament to Billy Joe’s words and the deep impact they had on so many wonderful songwriters and performers like Willie Nelson, Margo Price, Rodney Crowell, Miranda Lambert, Nathaniel Rateliff, Allison Russell and many more.

Seth Avett
Seth Avett Sings Greg Brown  (Ramseur Records)

A new generation has discovered the joys of wintry, isolation-fueled ballads, but Greg Brown has been wallowing in them for four decades. With songs that straddle folk and country and resist outsized hooks in favor of gaunt, gently rippling chord changes, the Iowa-based troubadour, who’s released over two dozen records, has been a cult figure for a reason. But along the way, he picked up a huge fan in Seth Avett who sings and plays these songs effortlessly, as if he’s been performing them his whole life, and he recorded them alone, in various hotel rooms on the road, for added intimacy.  His voice is more lilting and fluid than Brown’s and he makes some of these songs his own. As interpreted by Avett, Brown’s darker, more brooding songs are the keepers—and for a moment in history when we’re all losing a lot more sleep than usual. (edited from Rolling Stone review)

Jason Carter
Lowdown Hoedown (Fiddleman Records)

Prolific fiddler and mainstay of both The Del McCoury Band and The Travelin’ McCourys, if you’ve caught Jason and his fiery performances on stage you may think you know what to expect. But you’d be wrong. Of the 13 tracks on the record, only one is an instrumental, the Vassar Clements classic, “Kissimmee Kid”. All the rest are ones which he sings, with some help from his many friends in Nashville including Billy Strings, Vince Gill, Tim O’Brien, Aoife O’Donovan and Del and the band. Most of the material is either new, or obscure enough to feel novel, especially in the hands of Jason Carter and his co-producer Brent Truitt. (edited from Bluegrass Today review)

Emily Scott Robinson
Built On Bones
(Oh Boy Records)

Built on Bones came to life after Robinson became a part of Telluride Theatre’s adaptation of Macbeth, acting on stage in the role of Hecate — the leader of the three witches — and serving as musical director for the entire production. The songwriter wanted to present the play, which dates back to the early 1600s, through a distinctly modern lens. “We envisioned a version of the show where we gave the Witches a powerful voice, and in doing so, belied the history of violence against women and their magic. In making this record, we held in our hearts the intention to heal the lineage of women who came before us and declare that our power and magic cannot be controlled or snuffed out by a violent patriarchy of fearful men.” (edited from The Boot review)

Trampled by Turtles
Alpenglow
  (Banjodad Records)

In the almost 20 years the members of Trampled by Turtles have played together, they have learned to trust the process, bringing their best to recording sessions while remaining open to the possibilities that unfold. Alpenglow is an artfully curated listening experience that lives up to the band’s live performances. The album title evokes the rosy wash of light in the mountains just before sunrise or sunset, just as the songs play with the tension between nostalgia for the past and uncertainty in the face of change ahead. The melancholy edge to lead singer and songwriter Dave Simonett’s voice strikes a balance between confessional and hopeful. Simonett wrote 10 of the 11 tracks on the project, and credits producer Jeff Tweedy’s influence on songs he thought were finished when he brought them to the project. In particular, Tweedy contributed to the album’s “economy of language and time.” Trampled by Turtles’ personal dynamics also strengthened the final product.  (edited from No Depression review)
