Kassi Valazza
From Newman Street  (Fluff & Gravy Records)

Where Valazza’s penchant for the sixties singer-songwriter movement could be subtly detected on her previous album, albeit from a relatively broad musical palette, on this new offering, the influences appear narrower and the source more obvious throughout, in particular the early work of Joni Mitchell. The similarities in writing between Valazza and Mitchell, both more comfortable operating from a deeply personal perspective lyrically, rather than simply telling stories through songs, though it would be fair to say that to date Valazza has yet to match the sagacious level of Mitchell’s poetry. One can’t help but feel that the best is still to come from Valazza, which augurs well for the future, but for now, From Newman Street will do just fine.  (edited from Americana UK review)

 

Webb Wilder
Hillbilly Speedball  (Landslide Records)

Long before there were Kings of Leon, Keys of Black or Whites of Jack in Music City there was a riddle spewing prophet of roots rock and roll. A bluesy blast of baritone bombast. Equally versed in two glorious worlds, Rock and Roll with a strong side of Outlaw Country. He is a force on tour and a tour de force. He is the last of the Full Grown Men and Roots Rock Royalty. Combining potent Wilder originals with well-selected cover tunes penned by among others, Chuck Berry, David Grissom, and Willie Love. Hillbilly Speedball showcases Webb’s talent for delivering good old Southern rock and roll in his inimitable style.

Eliza Gilkyson
Dark Ages  (Realiza Records)

Eliza Gilkyson is a twice Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and activist who is one of the most respected musicians in Folk, Roots and Americana circles. The collection of songs is surprisingly upbeat although the record pulls no punches in terms of the times we find ourselves in. Eliza in her strongest and most compelling voice, as always covering the wide range of the human experience, following the threads of darkness and light, hope and beauty still to be found even in “dark ages.” Even her darkest moments are warmed by a genuine compassion for the lost souls who sometimes populate her stories, and a very real concern for the world we all live in is woven through every tune… Whether she looks into darkness or light, Eliza Gilkyson’s vision is impressive.  (edited from Folking review)

 

Willie Nelson
Oh What A Beautiful World  (Legacy Recordings)

It’s fun to hear Willie Nelson sing such words as “ninja,” “fishmonger” and “absinthe,” which are among the many pleasures found in the songbook of influential country songwriter Rodney Crowell. This is Nelson’s latest album devoted to the songs of a specific songwriter, and in Crowell, he’s interpreting a kindred spirit. While Crowell has a slightly different lyric vocabulary, both are Texans with a deep love of Hank Williams.The pairing – great songs and a great singer – works beautifully. The album just before Nelson’s 92nd birthday on April 29. He has long sounded ageless, but more than ever, Nelson sings like a sage. His reedy tenor can be a little whispery, but he displays surprising vocal range. His relaxed, conversational delivery is filled with warmth and wisdom. He’ll start a phrase late, end it early and make it seem perfect.  (from press release)

 


Shinyribs
Leaving Time  (Nine Mile Records)

This 9th studio album from Austin icon Shinyribs – is a fitting return to the roots. Reunited with the artist’s original record label, Nine Mile Records, Leaving Time sets aside the Soul horns and backup singers that have been a staple of the big Shinyribs band, in favor of a more stripped-down approach to this collection of songs. Fans of Kevin Russell’s first couple Shinyribs albums, and his previous band The Gourds, might hear a bit of a return to that era with these arrangements. (from WNCW review)

Wildwoods
Dear Meadowlark   (independent)

Purity still exists in modern-day music. There’s the purity of real instruments – violin, acoustic guitar, upright bass, percussion, and even cello – coupled with homespun harmonies that seem to float effortlessly into the ether. Then, there’s the purity of songs written from the soul, filling a human void. None of that ever goes out of style. Folk-Americana trio The Wildwoods, hailing from Lincoln, Nebraska, continue to bring sonic beauty and simplicity to today’s increasingly complicated and cluttered musical landscape. Suzy Thompson
Suzy Sings Siebel  (independent)

Paul Siebel made two excellent LPs in the early 1970s, but he had debilitating stage fright, hated the life of a touring musician, and his songwriting dried up, so in the 1980s he left the music world and disappeared. “A lifetime later, during the pandemic shutdown, I’d sit in a darkened room and sing and play the guitar, just like when I was a teenager. I found myself returning to Paul Siebel’s songs.” Suzy continues, “By this time, Paul was in his 80s, living in rural Maryland and in very poor health but heard some of my online recordings of his songs. We had four phone conversations before he died a few months later. it meant the world to me to get to know (a little bit) this person whose music I have loved for 50 years and to have him reach out to tell me that he really liked the way I was singing his songs. I was honored to be joined by many musical heroes on this project including Cindy Cashdollar, John Sebastian, Bill Evans, Jody Stecher and others.”  (edited from Bandcamp page)

 

Seth Walker
Why The Worry  (Royal Potato Records)

In the midst of recording his 12th album, wavering in his resolve to finish what he’d started, Seth Walker came to a realization. “This work does not define me. This is not who I am forever. This is just a moment.” No album is trapped in amber, no song is set in stone. Taking a page from Willie Nelson, Walker embraced the songwriter’s sage wisdom, “I’ve never seen worry accomplish anything… so I decided not to do it.” Truth be told, there aren’t many better oracles to hang an ethos on than brother Willie. The new album finds Walker reunited with old friends and familiar names. Pug Johnson
El Cabron  (independent)

If Townes van Zandt’s “Pancho and Lefty” got away with it, their lives might have ended up something like Texas singer/songwriter Pug Johnson’s outlaw, El Cabron. The titular character runs on swagger and split-second choices, often thriving in the liminal moments on the run living life hard. Drawing inspiration from Texas best-known deviants, like the characters in Larry McMurtry’s Lonesome Dove and Terry Allen’s Juarez, Johnson’s El Cabron (Spanish slang for “the bastard”) spends most of the album flirting with impropriety driven by a rakish disregard for order. Accompanied by a mix of Cajun, Tejano, Texas swing, and honky-tonk influenced sounds, his character escapes over the boarder into Mexico, dreams of life writ large, falls in and out of love, and kicks up his fair share of trouble. By album’s end, unlike many outlaws, El Cabron has learned a few lessons; he finds himself contemplating the future and armed with a few new adventure notches on his belt, he vows to make himself a better man.   (edited from No Depression review)

 

Alison Krauss & Union Station
Arcadia  (Down The Road Records)

It’s been 14 long years since 2011’s Paper Airplane and it looked as though Alison Krauss and Union Station had drifted off into the musical ether, but no – they’re back – not only with a new album, but a big string of (sold out) US live dates too. Alongside Krauss, Jerry Douglas (Dobro, lap steel, vocals), Ron Block (banjo, guitar, vocals) and Barry Bales (bass, vocals) there’s a new guy – Russell Moore on co-lead vocals, guitar and mandolin, plus guest appearances from former alumnus Dan Tyminski, fiddle-god Stuart Duncan and other musical and production luminaries as well. Right from the off, this sounds exactly as you would have hoped – and expected. Sumptuous playing, gorgeous vocals, a stellar warm production and a great collection of songs. Sometimes, when a band reunites, the hype is bigger than the reality, but with talent this massive, there was never a chance that this would be anything but a triumphant return. Charley Crockett
Lonesome Drifter  (Lone Star Rider/Island Records)

Crockett and co-producer Shooter Jennings set themselves the target of bottling “the magic of performance on tape.” Over the course of just 10 days, they cut the record’s 12 tracks live at the legendary Sunset Sounds Studio in LA. “I just brought all of my guys out, and the album made itself. It was live without a lot of overdubs.” Charley continues, “there were no inhibitions. I wasn’t being judged, and I didn’t feel self-conscious. Shooter knew how to cut loose and let this thing unfold.” Musically, the album traces a roadmap through Crockett’s own myriad of influences, tipping a hat to everybody from Waylon Jennings, Bill Withers, Bob Dylan, and Woody Guthrie, drawing on his countless experiences since he first left his native Texas. Foxes in the Snow  (Southeastern Records)

Last October in New York City, Jason Isbell booked five days in Electric Lady Studios and recorded his tenth solo studio album in its entirety. Just voice and acoustic guitar (his 1940 Martin 0-17) from beginning to end, and, by the sound of it, no overdubs. There are 11 new songs here – all of them nigh-on flawless – about love, loneliness, sex, toughness, sobriety, New York, Alabama, more love, words of wisdom, dangerous memories and more. When you take away the buttons and bells and strip a song to its essence, your focus is on this one voice and what it’s telling you – stories of himself, or some other character, or both, with some of the best lyrics around.  (edited from Mojo review)

The Devil Makes Three
Spirits (New West Records)

Whether it’s the state of the world or personal travails, a lot of people are going through it right now. Finding your way through these challenges isn’t easy; it takes resilience, clarity and a sense of purpose. These are the themes at the core of Spirits, the new LP by The Devil Makes Three and the trio’s first record since the 2018. Whereas Chains are Broken is very much rooted in a muscular roots rock and alt-country sound, Spirits features more stripped-down arrangements, wherein the brawn comes in the form of lyrical conviction and heartfelt delivery. The sentiment of seeing the rich get richer while everyone else is forced to struggle anchors the jaunty country of “Half as High.” There aren’t really any straightforward answers or resolutions to life’s challenges, although McBean’s ironic “I Love Doing Drugs” does present one possible option. But as the closing selection “Holding On” indicates, Bernhard and The Devil Makes Three really only see one way forward. (edited from No Depression review)
