Emily Scott Robinson
Built On Bones
(Oh Boy Records)

Built on Bones came to life after Robinson became a part of Telluride Theatre’s adaptation of Macbeth, acting on stage in the role of Hecate — the leader of the three witches — and serving as musical director for the entire production. The songwriter wanted to present the play, which dates back to the early 1600s, through a distinctly modern lens. “We envisioned a version of the show where we gave the Witches a powerful voice, and in doing so, belied the history of violence against women and their magic. In making this record, we held in our hearts the intention to heal the lineage of women who came before us and declare that our power and magic cannot be controlled or snuffed out by a violent patriarchy of fearful men.” (edited from The Boot review)

Trampled by Turtles
Alpenglow
  (Banjodad Records)

In the almost 20 years the members of Trampled by Turtles have played together, they have learned to trust the process, bringing their best to recording sessions while remaining open to the possibilities that unfold. Alpenglow is an artfully curated listening experience that lives up to the band’s live performances. The album title evokes the rosy wash of light in the mountains just before sunrise or sunset, just as the songs play with the tension between nostalgia for the past and uncertainty in the face of change ahead. The melancholy edge to lead singer and songwriter Dave Simonett’s voice strikes a balance between confessional and hopeful. Simonett wrote 10 of the 11 tracks on the project, and credits producer Jeff Tweedy’s influence on songs he thought were finished when he brought them to the project. In particular, Tweedy contributed to the album’s “economy of language and time.” Trampled by Turtles’ personal dynamics also strengthened the final product.  (edited from No Depression review)

Americana Music Releases for Oct. 21st

Here’s some the best Americana and roots-type music releases for October 21st, 2022. Click the artist or album links to find out more. Joe Ely
Flatland Lullaby
  (Rack ‘Em Records)

Now, to clarify: Flatland Lullaby is not necessarily what anyone, least of all Ely himself, would ever call a “big” record. It’s the kind of passion project that could have only ever come into focus when the initial target audience extended no farther than the man’s nearest and dearest — namely, his daughter Marie. “It’s basically a little lullaby album that I did for her when she was 2 or 3 years old,” says Ely. Now more than 50 years later, you can very much hear the sonic imprint of that time and place in Ely’s life and career all over Flatland Lullaby. For now, though, Ely’s just happy to have finally put the finishing touches on the weirdest, loveliest little album he’s ever made. And just in time to share it with a world that’s never needed the comfort of a good “Flatland Lullaby” more.  (edited from from Ely’s website)

Alex Williams
Waging Peace  (Lightning Rod Records)

You won’t find many reviews of Alex Williams without referencing either Waylon Jennings or “outlaw country”, if not both. And for good reason. Williams’ deep baritone and grizzled, gutsy style doesn’t just recall the 70s music of Jennings, Billy Joe Shaver, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Kris Kristofferson and others but continues a tradition those icons epitomized. It’s more than a musical approach, rather a swaggering way of life; one often watered down in what passes for country in today’s slicker performers. Waging Peace appears five years after Williams’ first release, capturing a tumultuous time that found him questioning life choices and facing the demons that often come attached to the trappings of a career on the road. With this new album, Williams reinforces the musical connections to his rowdy forbearers while forging a path towards a healthier, more stable career that’s only just getting started.  (edited from Holler. review)

Miko Marks & The Resurrectors
Feel Like Going Home
  (Redtone Records)

After facing the same roadblocks as a black singer trying to navigate the choppy waters of Country music and the Nashville scene that artists like Rissi Palmer and Mickey Guyton have spoken about, Miko Marks never thought she’d make another album again. Speaking on the record, Marks explains, ‘I spent my early career trying to fit into a very specific and limited image and sound within the country music genre. I love country music and always will, but I was raised on so much more, and it’s all in me waiting and wanting to come out. I just want to make the music that is true and honest from within my soul. To me it’s a blend of everything I carry. It’s country, it’s blues, it’s rock n roll, it’s gospel and soul.” And that is exactly what you’ll get on Feel Like Going Home.  (edited from Entertainment Focus review)

Bonny Light Horseman
Rolling Golden Holy
(independent)

By the time Anaïs Mitchell, Josh Kaufman, and Eric D. Johnson first convened as Bonny Light Horseman in 2018, each member already had the kind of career about which they once only dreamed. Their self-titled 2020 debut was a modern folk masterclass, with the trio reimagining centuries-old transatlantic standards with effortless grace and endless wonder.  This,  their second album are all originals, written and realized by the trio as a whole—follow the paths of the traditional tunes the band cherishes to new musical and lyrical frontiers, and give the sounds and situations of history the gravity and shape of now.  (from band’s bio)

Town Mountain
Lines in the Levee
(New West Records)

With their latest album Asheville, North Carolina-based Town Mountain takes time to look back at what they have lived through and to examine the legacy they will leave. The tracks offer glimpses into the tensions between staying home and taking to the road, the temptations just outside the stage door, and the frustration of trying to write a song that has not already been written. In their instrumentation, the band keeps to a core of traditional bluegrass with fiddle, banjo, mandolin, bass, and acoustic guitar, but other sounds, including Wurlitzer organ, sitar, and conga, add layers. Throughout Lines in the Levee, Town Mountain achieves balance, not only varying the pace of songs but also moving between serious introspection and humor.  (edited from No Depression review)

Americana Music Releases for Sept. 30th

Here’s some the best Americana and roots-type music releases for September 30th, 2022. Click the artist or album links to find out more. The artist’s names link to their websites and the CD title links go to either Amazon, iTunes, Bandcamp or the artist’s site for ordering or downloading.  A + sign means although not a featured release, it’s a notable album that’s still worth checking out.  Also, this page will be updated as I find out about other new releases so check back again.

Tyler Childers
Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven  (Hickman Holler Records)

This ambitious triple-abum is divided into three distinct parts — Hallelujah, Jubilee, and Joyful Noise — the conceptual project takes eight new songs and presents them in styles fitting those descriptions. The theme of faith and salvation runs through the albums’ songs, inspired by his own experiences. “I grew up Baptist and I was scared to death to go to hell,” Childers says, “And a lot of that stuck with me. Filtering through that and trying to find the truth, and the beauty, and the things you should think about and expelling all that nonsense has been something I’ve spent a lot of time on.” The different versions, he says, are like “processing life experiences in the different philosophies and religions that have formed me.” “Message wise, I hope that people take that it doesn’t matter race, creed, religion and all of that like — the most important part is to protect your heart, cultivate that and make that something useful for the world,” he adds.  (edited from Rolling Stone review)

John Fullbright
The Liar
(Blue Dirt Records)

It’s been eight years since John Fullbright last put out a record and for fans it’s felt even longer. The record is Fullbright’s most collaborative yet, deviating from mostly just being the loner at the piano churning out beautiful songs. You can hear that collaboration on songs like the remarkable title track, with guitars, drums and harmonica settling in nicely beside Fullbright’s piano. Recorded at Steve and Charlene Ripley’s farm studio in  Oklahoma, Fullbright brought together a collection of some of the best musicians Oklahoma’s got – most who have worked with Fullbright before. These sessions were handled in an astonishingly quick four days. But despite the compressed timeline the album is hardly a rushed affair. It builds on the brilliance of his 2 earlier albums offering a remarkable collection of affecting songs for emotions and moods that span the spectrum.   (edited from Americana Highway review)

Also new this week…

Mary Bragg – Mary Bragg  (Tree Tone Music)
The Cactus Blossoms – If Not For You (Bob Dylan Songs Vol. 1)

Coming out in the next few weeks…Town Mountain, Rory Block, Bonny Light Horseman, Courtney Patton, Miko Marks, Angela Easterling, Trampled by Turtles, Caleb Caudle, Melissa Carper, Seth Avett, Caitlin Rose, Bruce Springsteen and more …

Americana Music Releases for Sept. 23rd

Here’s some the best Americana and roots-type music releases for September 23rd, 2022.

Dr. John
Things Happen That Way  (Rounder/Concord Records)

For many years, Malcolm “Mac” Rebennack, Jr – the legendary New Orleans musician known to fans the world over as Dr. John – spoke about wanting to make a country & western album to pay homage to the musicians and songwriters whose songs had a profound and enduring effect on him. Rebennack was in the process of realizing that goal when his life was unexpectedly cut short by a fatal heart attack three years ago. Rebennack’s eldest daughter Karla Pratt was entrusted with the daunting task of seeing the album through to completion. “Though it’s very sad that my father isn’t here to see this project that meant so much to him finally be out in the world, I take great comfort in knowing that we fulfilled his long-held wishes. During his lifetime he frequently stated his desire to record this album with his dear, lifelong friend Willie Nelson and Willie’s son Lukas Nelson as treasured guest artists. We’re so grateful to the many musicians who contributed to this album, and I’m confident that Dad would be very proud of the final result.

Nikki Lane
Denim & Diamonds  (New West Records)

Nikki Lane needed a break. The grind of a road warrior like Lane is not for the faint of heart, and after the release of her third album, 2017’s Highway Queen, she wasn’t sure another go-round was in the cards. Here new album is the reward after some healthy time off and a lot of seeds of songs that just needed more watering. And though it’s been a few years, the minute Lane’s smoky coo kicks in on the album’s rollicking first notes, it’s like no time has passed. Denim & Diamonds isn’t reinventing the wheel, but a songwriter like Lane doesn’t need to. She knows what she can do, and this set is filled with all those tried-and-true elements of the best Lane songs. Her brash kiss-offs, lovelorn pleas, and plenty of that good old-fashioned American grit come out to play with producer Homme’s thrashing rock and roll sensi0bility — a deliciously satisfying combo. (edited from No Depression review)

Kendell Marvel
Come On Sunshine
(self-released)

Marvel is based in Tennessee, just outside of Nashville, but he decamped to Texas to record with producer Beau Bedford and work with new musicians. The shift south benefits the songs. Although the environs of most of the songs on Come On Sunshine are murky at best, the record’s title springs from an attempt to pull folks out of the depths of the pandemic. Marvel’s got a way with swampy blues, and “Keep Doing Your Thing” rides on a bottom-feeder-slimy groove as the singer evokes a live-and-let-live philosophy – “There’s more of us in the middle, than there are left or right/More of us wanna get along than wanna fuss and fight.” Overly optimistic? Maybe a little, but the freedom to be left alone is an underrated gift.  (edited from Americana Highways review)

Adam Hood
Bad Days Better  (Southern Songs)

Raised in Opelika, Alabama, Hood’s rearing didn’t much involve music, but judging by the seemingly synonymous status between his name and a chart-topping country hit, it seems he was born to do it. His self-releases have marked him as a mainstay country artist in his own right. With the help of members of Blackberry Smoke and producer Brent Cobb, Hood calls his newest 10 songs through and through “southern music” – chock full of soul and Hood’s powerful testament to getting better. Hood shared. “This album is really introspective. There’s a lot of soul searching and spiritual stuff on there. I don’t drink anymore so I can actually remember the last time I played. My family life has changed. My life as an artist has changed. I’d say for the better.”  (edited from American Songwriter review)

Charley Crockett
The Man From Waco  (Son of Davy Records)

Just a few months after releasing his latest covers record, Jukebox Charley, this new original album keeps up with his prolific two-albums-per-year clip. Crockett is certainly not hurting for recorded content, but there are quite a few things that will make The Man from Waco unique from his previous releases. First, he goes with the man who has been managing him for a while now, Bruce Robison. Also making the album unique, Crockett recorded it entirely with his backing band The Blue Drifters as opposed to bringing in auxiliary players and Crockett writes or co-writes all 14 tracks.“Everybody was telling me: “go right, go right, go right,’” says Crockett. “I went left. I had to hold on to what has gotten me this far.” As for working with Robison, Crockett says, “I just wanted an honest partnership: do it at your place, live to tape, everybody in the room. The magic is in the performances on that tape. That’s what Bruce wanted to do, that’s what I wanted to do.” Charley Crockett just continues to follow his gut, and it’s gotten him pretty far.  (edited from Saving Country Music review)

I Draw Slow
I Draw Slow (Compass Records)

I Draw Slow is one Americana’s most interesting bands, blending traditional Irish and American Appalachian influences into a signature brew that has earned them ardent fans on both sides of the Atlantic. Fronted by brother/sister songwriting team Dave Holden and Louise Holden this Dublin, Ireland-based group sits squarely at the crossroads of Irish and Appalachian music and has received critical praise for an original sound that bridges the gap between traditional Irish and American roots music. But their experiences during the pandemic turned out to be musically transformative and helped to shape an album that shows tremendous musical growth and yields some surprising, and extremely satisfying, musical results.

Lloyd Maines
Eagle Number 65  (self-released)

“During 50 years of recording, I’ve either produced or played on around 5000 projects, and I am very grateful for that opportunity. I started playing guitar at the age of 13 from a Mel Bay chord book. I started playing pedal steel at age 17. Steel is my main instrument but over the years, because of needing something different on recordings, I learned to play several other instruments. During year two of the Covid pandemic, I decided to produce an album on myself. It was recorded in my little, funky man cave studio at our house in Austin. Because I have four very talented grandkids, they are included on the album. These 12 songs are the result of our family adventure.”

Valerie June
Under Cover
  (Fantasy Records)

Valerie June’s sonic alchemy has been on the global radar since Dan Auerbach got involved with her trad/modern song fusions as producer on 2013’s Pushin’ Against a Stone. Black gospel flair and East Tennessee folk leanings came together on that recording with riveting pop ideas, and June has been adding further influences and interests to the dynamic mix on ensuing albums. It makes sense, then, that June would gift her listeners with one of the more imaginative covers projects we’ve heard in some time. Under Cover features four previously released remakes, available as one-off singles or as bonus tracks on deluxe releases, along with four new covers of song by Bob Dylan, Nick Drake, Frank Ocean and more,  (edited from No Depression review)

Jim Lauderdale
Game Changer  (Missing Piece Music)

So let’s cut to the chase:  if you enjoyed most of Lauderdale’s previous 34 albums, you are going to enjoy Game Changer.  Game Changer has everything you would want in a Lauderdale album – interesting and moving songwriting, remarkable musicianship across the board, and his singular voice.  That is not to damm Game Changer with faint praise; it is, rather,  to acknowledge the remarkable consistency of his recordings.  Lauderdale himself is well aware of the challenge his own history creates.  He says that  “It’s a constant challenge to try to keep making better and better records, write better and better songs. I still always feel like I’m a developing artist.”
