Maya de Vitry
All My Faith (Mad Maker Studio)
It doesn’t seem that long ago that singer-songwriter Maya de Vitry’s former group, The Stray Birds, was charming audiences. Yet that ended in 2018, and de Vitry has been prolific since, issuing her fifth solo album, All My Faith. She originally hails from Lancaster, PA, but has resided in Nashville for nearly a decade. Her crystalline voice is the essence of beauty, while her songwriting continues to grow in personal expression and imagery. The album embraces folk music, folk-rock, and alt-country influences. Simply put, she’s leaning more toward country here than on her previous releases. The project, recorded in three days, with an emphasis on interaction and spontaneity. She gathered her closest collaborators including Spencer Cullum (pedal steel) and Ethan Ballinger (guitar), both members of Miranda Lambert’s touring band. Joining them are Jo Schornikow on keys and de Vitry’s own band members: bassist Ethan Jodziewicz, drummer Dominic Billet, and harmony vocalists Shelby Means and Joel Timmons. All My Faith is Maya de Vitry’s crowning achievement. She’s adeptly crafted a marriage of vivid imagery and emotional honesty. (edited from Glide Magazine review)
Punch Brothers
The Unsung Adventures of Punch Brothers (Nonesuch Records)
Led by mandolinist Chris Thile with guitarist Chris Eldridge, bassist Paul Kowert, banjoist Noam Pikelny, and violinist Brittany Haas— cast off and set sail boldly in search of new musical territories on their seventh album. Tacking and jibing through tumultuous and tranquil waves of sound, Punch Brothers follows the siren songs of classical, bluegrass, and jazz as they wend their way through wide channels of innovation. The Unsung Adventures of Punch Brothers nods not only to the yet-to-be-told sonic journeys of Punch Brothers on this album but also to the eleven instrumental tracks (“unsung”) on the album through which those journeys unfold. We are fortunate to have yet another superb album from these five supremely gifted musicians, and it’s clearly one of the best albums of the year so far. (Edited from Folk Alley review)
