Americana Music Releases for Oct. 7th

Here’s some the best Americana and roots-type music releases for October 7th, 2022. Click the artist or album links to find out more. The artist’s names link to their websites and the CD title links go to either Amazon, iTunes, Bandcamp or the artist’s site for ordering or downloading.  A + sign means although not a featured release, it’s a notable album that’s still worth checking out.  Also, this page will be updated as I find out about other new releases so check back again.

Bonny Light Horseman
Rolling Golden Holy
(independent)

By the time Anaïs Mitchell, Josh Kaufman, and Eric D. Johnson first convened as Bonny Light Horseman in 2018, each member already had the kind of career about which they once only dreamed. Their self-titled 2020 debut was a modern folk masterclass, with the trio reimagining centuries-old transatlantic standards with effortless grace and endless wonder.  This,  their second album are all originals, written and realized by the trio as a whole—follow the paths of the traditional tunes the band cherishes to new musical and lyrical frontiers, and give the sounds and situations of history the gravity and shape of now.  (from band’s bio)

Town Mountain
Lines in the Levee
(New West Records)

With their latest album Asheville, North Carolina-based Town Mountain takes time to look back at what they have lived through and to examine the legacy they will leave. The tracks offer glimpses into the tensions between staying home and taking to the road, the temptations just outside the stage door, and the frustration of trying to write a song that has not already been written. In their instrumentation, the band keeps to a core of traditional bluegrass with fiddle, banjo, mandolin, bass, and acoustic guitar, but other sounds, including Wurlitzer organ, sitar, and conga, add layers. Throughout Lines in the Levee, Town Mountain achieves balance, not only varying the pace of songs but also moving between serious introspection and humor.  (edited from No Depression review)
